Dunks were inspired by basketball and made for the players of the day. They were designed as a sports trainer with the movements of the players in mind. They were actually designed from scratch with different panelling and lower profile soles. They were intended to reflect the quick moves and sharp turns on the basketball court. Nike had a big launch in which they signed up some university teams for example Maryland, Kentucky and Syracuse. The Dunks were made in the university team colours.
In 1998, Nike did a product relaunch and Dunks were once again re-styled. Now the tongues and arch insoles were made from nylon. Dunks had also come under the fashion radar and high street couture was beginning to sit up and take note. The range was extended to appeal to a wider target audience. More colours were introduced and a more high street cred appeal was mainstreamed.
Dunks are still a sports shoe at heart. They are worn by everyone from all walks of life, but deep down it is the athletic impact which makes them a favourite of runners and joggers. They are light to wear, unlike other shoes which are clumpy and need getting used to and because of this, their mass appeal has grown in popularity.
Skateboarders love Dunks these days. Nike, with its ear to the ground, or its hand on the pulse - are quick to adapt to the changing trends. Dunks are made for skateboarders too. These SB Dunks, have more puffy tongues which is the type of footwear that skateboarders prefers.
Have you brought your Dunks with you? Just as people can say they have Nikes and everyone knows what they mean, Dunks have the same sort of mass appeal. They are a real iconic piece of footwear and attract attention from all quarters and all walks of society.
Designer Dunks are also in fashion. Many designers use Dunks in their collections, but Nike also asks designers to make new designs. There was even a rumour that you could design your own Dunks for yourself. That would be cool! They are also a part of everyday life with TV stars and soap queens having their own pairs made for them.
Dunks have been around for a long time and they are here to stay. With their appeal to students and white collar workers and their affordability - although some of them have been known to sell for thousands of dollars - they are a real institution.
